Now that it’s bringing in customers, it’s slowing down, and if there’s an outage, you’re left on your own with just a support ticket. Managed WordPress hosting is a service where the provider handles server management, environment updates, backups, security, and monitoring. The difference from shared hosting or a VPS is that you don’t need any technical knowledge and you receive support specifically for WordPress. Below, I’ll explain how these three types compare, when managed hosting is the right choice, and what I personally look for when comparing WordPress hosting options.

What is managed WordPress hosting?

Managed WordPress hosting is a type of hosting in which the hosting provider manages and secures the entire server environment for you, set up for WordPress. You take care of your website; the provider handles everything else. I like to compare it to a rental apartment with a property manager. If the boiler leaks, you call the property manager and don’t have to get out a wrench yourself. If you live in your own home, you maintain that boiler yourself and also pay the repairman yourself if something goes wrong.

Here's what a provider should do for you, at a minimum—this is what it looks like in practice.

Server administration, which involves keeping the web server, the operating system, and the database up and running and up to date.

Security featuring a firewall (WAF) that blocks malicious traffic, malware scans, and DDoS protection.

Automatic backups stored off-site.

Monitoring the servers so that a problem is detected before you call.

Keep the PHP version and server software up to date, with a staging environment for safe testing.

Support from people who know WordPress, not just the server.

Managed hosting is generally available for other software as well, and you sometimes see it referred to as managed web hosting. The difference from managed WordPress hosting is that the server is optimized to run only WordPress, with server caching and PHP settings tailored to that purpose. The opposite is called unmanaged hosting. With this, you get a bare-bones server, and the rest is up to you. For most business owners, that’s not freedom—it’s just another job on top of everything else.

Shared hosting, VPS, and managed WordPress hosting side by side

Shared hosting is a type of hosting in which many websites share a single server and its resources, such as processing power (CPU), memory, and storage. As a result, your “neighbors” on that server help determine how fast your site runs. If another site is running a resource-intensive import or experiencing a surge in bot traffic, you’ll notice it. A VPS (virtual private server) is your own virtual server with fixed resources, on which you install, secure, and update everything yourself. A dedicated server follows the same concept, but consists of an entire physical machine dedicated solely to you. The table shows how these differences play out in practice.

Component

Shared hosting

VPS

Managed WordPress hosting

Who manages the server?

The provider, in essence

You, or an administrator you hire

The provider, optimized for WordPress

Technical knowledge required

Not much

Various (Linux, web server, security)

Not much

Performance and Resources

Shared, depending on your neighbors

Fixed allocation, scalable as needed

Limited per account, with server caching

Security

Server-Level Foundation

Entirely your own responsibility

Firewall and malware scans provided by the service provider

Backups

Often, yes; sometimes to a limited extent

Arrange it yourself

Automatically, outside the server

Support

General Hosting Support

Hardware and network only

WordPress-Level Support

Price Level

Low

Midday, plus your own time

Medium to high

Suitable for

Hobby sites and small sites with no revenue

Developers and Custom Solutions

Corporate Websites and Online Stores on WordPress

There are also hybrid options between these two types. A managed VPS gives you your own resources, but the provider handles the management. In addition, there is managed cloud hosting, the scalable option for high-traffic websites and online stores. In my experience, most small and medium-sized business websites aren’t ready for this until they’ve truly hit their limits. So don’t start out bigger than necessary, but do choose a provider that can support your future growth.

When should you choose managed WordPress hosting (and when shouldn't you)?

Managed WordPress hosting is the right choice as soon as your website is worth money and no one in your company wants to or is able to manage servers. I’m quite outspoken about this. If your site generates revenue or brings in customers, then managed WordPress hosting isn’t a luxury—it’s the cheapest insurance you can buy. For a hobby blog, it’s unnecessary. These factors are decisive for me.

Choose managed WordPress hosting if your site generates revenue, leads, or appointments.

Choose managed WordPress hosting if you run a WooCommerce online store. For online stores, there is also Managed WooCommerce Hosting, with additional resources for the checkout and shopping cart.

Choose managed WordPress hosting if no one on your team is able or willing to manage a server.

Choose managed WordPress hosting if you're experiencing slow performance or outages with shared hosting.

Choose managed WordPress hosting if you want to keep your customer data within Europe and need a data processing agreement.

The reverse is also true. If you have a hobby blog or a temporary promotional site, good shared hosting is perfectly fine. If you’re a developer yourself and want to configure the server down to the last detail, a VPS makes more sense. And if you’re not running WordPress, managed WordPress hosting is, by definition, of little use to you.

To be fair, managed WordPress hosting does have its drawbacks. You pay more than you would for a basic plan, you have less control, and you’re limited to the provider’s choices. Some providers block plugins that conflict with their server caching or restrict server settings that you’d normally be able to adjust on a VPS. On top of that, there’s vendor lock-in. You can’t always take specific settings or your own tools with you when you switch providers. If you want complete freedom, that means getting a VPS—with all the responsibility that comes with it.

What managed hosting doesn't do for you

Managed hosting manages the environment in which your site runs, not necessarily your website itself. That’s the misunderstanding I encounter most often. Someone chooses managed hosting, assumes everything is taken care of, and is shocked when an outdated plugin crashes the site. Hosting takes care of the server, PHP, backups, the firewall, and monitoring. WordPress maintenance involves the site itself—testing and installing updates for the core, plugins, and themes; checking links; and keeping your content up to date. You can handle that maintenance yourself using the WordPress Maintenance Checklist as a guide, or you can outsource it through WordPress maintenance.

Also take a close look at what you *are* allowed to do. Some managed hosting plans restrict your access—for example, by not providing SSH access or a File Manager, or by having a list of unsupported plugins. If your developer works via SSH or WP-CLI, be sure to check this in advance rather than after the migration. Personally, I think it’s a bad sign if a provider is vague about this.

There are a few things that remain your responsibility no matter what type of hosting you use. Set strong passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA) for your WordPress login, because no firewall can stop a leaked password. And be sure to create an extra backup yourself right before making a major change, such as installing a new theme or a major plugin update. Last night’s automatic backup won’t help you if you’ve just spent an afternoon working on your site. In short, managed hosting keeps the server healthy, and WordPress maintenance keeps your site healthy.

What should you look for when comparing managed WordPress hosting?

Not every package with “managed” in the name actually provides management, so compare what’s actually included. My minimum requirements are active server monitoring, daily backups, server caching, and support with WordPress expertise. Another question I always ask is who handles the WordPress and plugin updates, because that’s where the biggest difference between providers lies. Below, I’ve provided a brief summary for each component, along with a link to an article that goes into more detail.

Speed: Storage, Web Server, and Caching

Fast WordPress hosting runs on NVMe storage, a web server with built-in server caching such as LiteSpeed or Varnish, sufficient PHP workers, and OPcache. In What Makes Up Fast WordPress Hosting I'll explain how those components work together. On LiteSpeed servers, you connect the plugin LiteSpeed Cache directly from the server cache, and you can read more about storage Why Surver Made the Full Switch to NVMe. For high-traffic websites and online stores, it helps Object Caching and Redis. A CDN is especially useful for an international audience; see When a CDN Is Useful.

Safe Testing and Updating: Staging and PHP Version

A staging environment is a copy of your site where you can test updates before they go live. A good managed hosting service makes creating such a copy easy and lets you choose the PHP version yourself in the hosting control panel. A newer PHP version is faster and more secure, but an older plugin might stop working, so always test first. Read how to WordPress staging environment plan, how to Update PHP Version handles safely and what PHP 8.2 changed.

Security, SSL, and Availability

Hosting-level security includes a server firewall, malware scans, and an SSL certificate that renews automatically. Is SSL included with WordPress hosting? It is with virtually every reputable provider—for free and automatically. See SSL Certificate and HTTPS. If things do go wrong, someone will have to detect the malware, fix the problem, and restore the site. That's exactly what WordPress hacked does.

Uptime is the percentage of time your site is accessible. A 99.9 percent uptime guarantee sounds high, but on an annual basis, it allows for nearly nine hours of downtime. Pay close attention to what is being monitored—just the servers, or your site as well. Read What 99.9 percent uptime means, how our status page You'll see if the problem is with the hosting provider, and what to do if you WordPress Website Offline is.

Migrate Without Downtime

For most people, migration is the biggest hurdle to switching hosting providers, even though it involves little risk if done in the right order. First, you copy the site to the new environment, test it there, and only then change the DNS settings. The complete step-by-step guide can be found in Migrating a WordPress Website Without Downtime. If you don't want to do it yourself, you can also have it done through a moving service, including email and DNS.

Data Centers in Europe and the GDPR

If your site is hosted in a data center within Europe, your customers’ personal data remains subject to the GDPR, without the need for additional agreements regarding data transfers to countries outside the EU. This includes a data processing agreement—the contract that specifies how your hosting provider handles that data. Check both of these before making your choice, especially if you have an online store or a customer portal. This is not legal advice, but it is the first question a customer or lawyer will ask you.

How does a WordPress website work from a technical standpoint?

A WordPress website consists of layers that build on one another. The domain and DNS direct visitors to the correct server; the web server receives the request; PHP builds the page and retrieves the content from the database; and the files contain your theme, plugins, and uploads. Managed hosting manages the lower layers, up to and including PHP and the database. The files and content remain yours. You can find more information in How a WordPress Website Works Technically. If you want to go deeper, these are the topics I would read next.

The .htaccess file and the rules you include most often

Disable WP-Cron and replace it with a real cron job

The WordPress REST API and what you use it for

Headless WordPress and when it makes sense

WordPress Multisite for multiple sites from a single dashboard

Which package is right for your site?

What we provide as standard at Surver is exactly the layer that keeps coming up in this article. Your site runs on LiteSpeed servers with NVMe storage and LiteSpeed Cache; OPcache is enabled, and a Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate is renewed automatically and free of charge. The ModSecurity firewall and real-time malware scans with Imunify keep most threats at bay, and every day we automatically create backups stored in separate data centers within Europe. You can restore these yourself at no cost using JetBackup 5 in cPanel. If you’d like to test it first, you can clone your installation in Installatron to a staging environment. On Surver Cloud, we’ll set that up for you, and it includes Redis for object caching. Your data stays within Europe with a standard data processing agreement, you’ll always speak to a real person when contacting support, and we’ll handle the migration for free. You can find a complete overview at our Managed WordPress Hosting.

If you're unsure which package to choose, go for the decision aid or check out our prices. If you're having trouble figuring it out, send us your current website and we'll take a look at what it needs—with no obligation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is managed WordPress hosting more expensive than shared hosting?

Yes. The provider takes over the work and hosts fewer sites per server, and that’s reflected in the price. Weigh that against the hours it takes to manage the site yourself and the risk of a hacked or slow site. For a site that brings in customers, that calculation almost always favors managed hosting.

Does managed WordPress hosting include email?

That varies by provider. Some providers only host your website and outsource email to another provider. With Surver, email is included in your package—with up to 10 GB per mailbox—and you can Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 Purchase it through us if that's what you prefer.

How often are backups made?

With a good managed hosting service, backups are performed at least once a day and stored off the server where your site runs. Surver automatically creates daily backups in separate data centers within Europe, which you can restore yourself at no cost. In addition, be sure to create your own backup before making any major changes.

What is the best WordPress hosting in Europe?

There’s no clear-cut winner here, because it depends on your site and your requirements. In any case, check whether your data is stored in a data center within Europe, whether you receive a data processing agreement as standard, and whether the support team truly understands WordPress. A provider that gives clear answers to those three questions usually does well in other areas as well.

Je site draait al jaren op een goedkoop hostingpakket.
